Mano’s Marathon story

Mano ran the London Marathon in 2019 to raise money for the Maudsley Charity

Mano ran the London Marathon on 28th April to raise money for the Maudsley Charity. Since 2007 she has been training and working at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She is a Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist based at the Ladywell Unit in Lewisham

“I’m proud to work for the NHS and this is one way I can give back. I ran for the Maudsley Charity to highlight the support it provides to improve care, support recovery and prevent mental illness. It works with patients and staff across the hospital trust and in the local community.

“A giant leap out of my comfort zone!”

This was her very first marathonIt was a giant leap out of my comfort zone but I really enjoyed training for itI recently completed a half marathon and it’s making me keep fit and be disciplined.

She continues: “Committing to this project helped me to be a good role model for my patients. We all know how important physical health and exercise are to mental well-being.

Backing better mental health

Mano also ran in support of the Maudsley Charity’s funding of innovative research and collaboration with leading clinicians and academics. She is currently conducting a research project herself at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, funded by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre

“The Maudsley Charity are here to promote positive change in the world of mental health, through innovative research, service improvement and raising awareness. Anything you can give, big or small, will be an incredible help.”

“To any colleagues thinking about running the Marathon my advice would be to go for it. The Maudsley Charity team have been here to support me.”

An incredible experience

Mano finished the marathon with sore legs but a smile on her face: “It was an incredible experience running for Maudsley Charity. The team were all absolutely fabulous, and it’s heartwarming to know that the funds raised are for a great cause to help patients at SLaM.

Whenever I encountered a difficult moment in my run I was thinking about the rewarding work done by the Maudsley Charity for SLaM patients and it kept me going.”

Thank you

The Maudsley Charity would like to express their thanks to Mano: “We’re incredibly grateful to Mano for running the Marathon to fundraise for the Maudsley Charity. The money she has raised will be used to help make a difference to the lives of our patients and staff.
