This year, more than ever, our patients need your help at Christmas. More than 700 people will face spending Christmas Day in hospital. Across our inpatient services many of these people won’t have family or friends to visit them or receive a Christmas present. Many of the people using our services don’t even have a home.
COVID-19 is having the worst impact on vulnerable people who are already struggling, with many people finding it difficult to cope or not sure where to seek help.
As well as our usual work supporting people experiencing or at risk of experiencing mental illness, we want to make sure patients in hospital receive a present on Christmas Day this year. These presents will include toiletries, small items of comfort such as blankets, art materials and games. We’re also supporting our hard working staff who will be working across our services on Christmas Day with small gifts of chocolates and healthy treats for each ward to share.
We’re asking you to make a simple cash donation – small or large – through our website. The money that we collect will help support our vital mental health work, including the cost of purchasing the Christmas presents, which is around £10,000. You can donate here
Toy donation scheme
If you’d like to help in another way we are running a toy present donation scheme. We know that the act of giving someone a simple present can make a huge difference, last year one Mother said: “My kid was so happy to have a gift for Xmas and it gave us something to do with them and they shared and played the games amongst themselves. It was a beautiful gift and made me feel happier that people thought of us. Thank you.”
You can take gifts to our children’s service in Southwark where they will be wrapped by volunteers and given to families in most need. Gifts should be new and ideally have an educational or developmental focus, please do not donate gifts that need batteries. Please drop gifts by 18 December off at the Maudsley Hospital main reception or Chaucer Resource Centre, 13 Ann Moss Way, SE16 2TH open Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm.
