An artwork to celebrate the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife was unveiled at Maudsley Hospital on Thursday 17 December. Co-designed with nurses from the Trust and created by Bethlem Gallery artist Sarah Carpenter, the artwork titled “HOLD” has been installed at Maudsley Hospital’s main reception. The project was made possible by a grant from Maudsley Charity.
Mary Yates, Nurse Consultant for Health Promotion and Wellbeing, said: “I am proud to have contributed to the development of the new artwork at Maudsley Hospital reception, which celebrates SLaM nursing. We have transformed this important space to create a calm and welcoming feeling for people in our community who are coming to use our service. Well done to all our amazing nursing colleagues and sincere thanks to Bethlem Gallery and Maudsley Charity for making this happen.”
Alice Casey, Director of Programmes, Maudsley Charity said: “2020 has been a uniquely challenging year, we are so proud of and grateful for the dedication of all our SLaM nursing colleagues. We hope this Maudsley Charity funded artwork will in a small way help to give public thanks for and recognition of nurses’ vital role throughout the Trust this year and every year.”
2020 is Florence Nightingale’s bicentennial year, designated by World Health Organisation as the first ever global Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Nurses are the largest section of the NHS workforce and the Trust has 2,585 nurses. They are highly skilled, multi-faceted professionals from a host of backgrounds that represent our diverse communities. You can read some of their stories here: https://slam.nhs.uk/media/our-blog/
