Mental health nurse to run London Marathon for the Maudsley Charity

Emma works at the Maudsley Hospital as a mental health nurse, and many of her patients benefit from Charity-funded projects

Emma was due to run the London Marathon in April 2020, but despite the disruptions of COVID-19, will still be running it on 3rd October 2021. She is raising money for the Maudsley Charity, a cause that is near to her heart. She has been working at the Maudsley Hospital for two years as a mental health nurse, and many of her patients benefit from Charity-funded projects.

She has been a runner for many years, having done a few half marathons, and felt that now was the right time to take on this significant sporting challenge. When confirming her place and picking a charity she says “I couldn’t think of anyone better to run for”.

Emma has already run a few half marathons

“It’s great to be able to fundraise for the things that really make a difference”

As a nurse she’s worked across a variety of wards, including with adolescents and the Early Intervention Service which supports those with psychosis. She’s seen the positive impact that projects such as Raw Sounds can make to them. “It’s the social things that really make a difference to clients – helping them to get out and have more independence – the little things we all take for granted. It’s a chance to meet other people who have gone through similar experiences, in a safe and supportive environment”.

“We all know how important exercise is to mental health, so it’s also great to be able to fundraise for initiatives like the Parkrun at Bethlem Royal Hospital.”

Fundraising with a little help from friends

Her fundraising efforts are going well with the help of some generous friends who have secured donations, including over £1,000 from the Foyle Foundation. “Mental health affects us all, and I’ve found that my friends are really happy to be able to support the cause.”

On Thursday 30th January held a bake sale in the Maudsley Hospital canteen and raised close to £200! Plans are underway to hold a quiz night in a local Camberwell pub, so make sure you look out for it and give generously!
