Art & Value

What do we measure and why? What does art help us to value?

Bethlem Gallery, BR3 3BX

What do we measure and why?

What does art help us to value?

To answer these questions, artists Leon B, Sarah Carpenter, Beth Hopkins and Robyn Smith have been in conversation with academics and researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London.

In a world where various, clinical methods are used to measure illness, wellness and ‘recovery’, art offers a personal perspective on what deserves to be counted and why.

Art and Value, Bethlem Gallery exhibition

IN THE STUDIO SPACE Unescorted #9

Unescorted showcases artwork by patients who have used medium secure services at Bethlem Royal Hospital, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The title Unescorted refers to the leave status granted to secure patients during their recovery.

Unescorted #9 shows how artists work with ideas of value and measure within the particular structures of day-to-day life in the Medium Secure Unit at River House.
